Cait Flanders is a bestselling author from an island off the west coast of Canada…

Her first book, THE YEAR OF LESS (2018), was described by Vogue as “a fascinating look into a living experiment that we can all learn from.” It became a Wall Street Journal bestseller, has sold more than 190,000 copies in English, and been translated into 11 languages. Her second book, ADVENTURES IN OPTING OUT (2020), is a field guide to changing paths and leading a more intentional life. Powell's Books says it, “offers a sturdy and flexible framework to navigate whatever path you are currently on.”

Cait’s first writing job was in public affairs and involved crafting media releases and speeches for a Cabinet Minister. Her last full-time job was working as the managing editor of a personal finance site based in Toronto. In-between, she spent five years working for the Ministry of Education in BC. It was during these years that she began going to university part-time, and completed her degree in Communications. She has been a self-employed writer since 2015.

From 2010-2018, Cait wrote a popular personal finance blog, originally titled Blonde on a Budget. In those years, she picked up freelance writing work for various personal finance, travel, and mental health sites around the world. She has also written for The Globe and Mail; appeared on Breakfast Television, CBC News, Global News and The Social; and spoken at Google (London). More recently, she has been a contributor to Happiful Magazine (UK).

While some of her personal interests have shifted, one passion that has always carried through her life is sharing the books she reads. At the age of five, Cait turned her small collection of books into a library that the kids in her neighbourhood could borrow from. Today, she values sharing books more than owning them, and leaves almost every book she finishes in a new place (little free library, coffee shop, etc.) for someone to find and enjoy.

Cait was born and raised on an island off the west coast of Canada (specifically born on the traditional territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ people). As a child, she moved around constantly, and grew up learning how to start over and make friends everywhere she went. To that end, it’s not surprising she continued to move/travel extensively for many years, before ultimately deciding where to settle. Cait now lives in the UK countryside, and is working on her goal of being able to say she’s written “a little bit of everything.”
