TGIF: I Bought a New Bed!

Seriously, I don’t think I’ve been this excited about something in months – and it’s a piece of furniture. But let’s backtrack a bit.

I have been talking about buying a new bed since the beginning of the year. My best friend Emma says it’s been more like two years (which means she’s happy I can now stop, haha), but I know for sure that I’ve been talking about it on BoaB since at least January. From then until now, I’ve made a lot of excuses not to buy one. I don’t have the money right now, I have to pay for this or that first, and it’s just not a priority. In July, however, when I started my yearlong shopping ban, I wrote a list of a few things I was allowed to buy – and I finally made a new bed a priority, by putting it on that list.

When I started the shopping ban, I also opened a basic savings account with Tangerine and named it – you guessed it – “Shopping Ban”. Whenever I sold an item from the declutter, I immediately deposited the money into my Shopping Ban account. On top of that, I’ve secretly been putting $60/month in there, so that I’m saving the money I haven’t been spending on takeout coffee. There are a few other random amounts I’ve tossed in (which I’ll share next week, when I do a 3-month check-in), and less than 3 months later I had:

Now, I had fully intended on saving all of this money (and more) until July 2015, so I could go on some sort of shopping spree once the ban was over. But after a week of tossing and turning, and waking up every morning with a sore back, I knew the bed situation had to be dealt with. On Sunday, I went to the Sleep Country that’s just down the road from my place, tested out a bunch of beds and found one I loved. I knew it would likely cost me at least $1,000, but I was blown away when the salesman offered it to me for just $905.

And by blown away, I mean I basically just handed him my money and said: yes please, now thanks.

With all taxes in + a $10 fee to recycle my old bed, the bill rung in at $1,024.10. I swiped my credit card (that’s $10 cash back!), went home and drained my Shopping Ban account, then paid off the last $263.93 on payday this week. The bed was delivered yesterday afternoon and, I’m not going to lie to you guys… I’ve been laying on it ever since. There’s a good chance I’ll work from there today! And I have the shopping ban + no takeout coffee rule to thank. (And Sleep Country… they were really good to me.)

The high of my week was seeing the pain specialist my doctor referred me to months ago and finally feeling like there might be some new options for me! He injected some freezing into my lower back, which should relax some of the muscles that have been sore this whole time and then I can start to stretch them out. I’m going back for more in 4 weeks, and will continue doing this for a number of months. He also put in a req. for me to get some cortisone injections at the hospital. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go down this route, but it’s been nearly 15 months since the accident, so I think it’s time to exhaust all options.

A blog post I loved was The Crossroads of Should and Must. “If you feel a knot in your stomach because you can see the enormous distance between your dreams and your daily reality, do one thing to tighten your grip on what you want — today. Because there is a recurring choice in life, and it occurs at the intersection of two roads. We arrive at this place again and again. And today, you get to choose.”

The best money I spent was $1,024.10 on that big ol’ bed. It’s going to be worth every penny.

My plans this weekend include going to the Girl’s Night Out Comedy Show at the Arts Centre in Port Moody tonight, seeing Gone Girl in theatres tomorrow (I can’t tell you the last time I went to a movie theatre), and having individual Skype dates with both Baby Bro and Gail on Sunday!

How was your week, friends? What are you up to this weekend?

  • Nice mattress!
I have a couple of questions, is it a pillow top and if so can you only rotate it and not flip it?
With regards to Tangerine, can you open as many savings account as you want? I thought I had read that somewhere but when I tried to open another one (I think they are called ASP) I couldn’t.
    Thanks for the help.

    • It is a pillow top, yes, and you rotate it once/month. They don’t make them w/ pillow top on both sides anymore.

And as far as I know, you can have as many accounts as you want. I only have 3, but have seen people with 8+! They used to be called ISA’s I think, but are now just the Tangerine Savings Account. (ASP = automatic savings program)

  • Oh! I didn’t know Gone Girl was out in theatre…I need to see this!

This week I made 48 oatmeal choc chip cookies one night, and a big pot of pasta sauce (enough for 6 dinners) another night …winning!

I also got my snazzy new VISA card and starting linking it to all my accounts and setting up pre-authorized payments.

This weekend…hopefully a 17 or 18km run, and we are having a baseball team shindig.

    Have a great weekend!!!

    • Dang, girl. Way to go! I need to get serious about meal planning, when I’m back from Denver/Victoria. I should be home for at least 6 weeks, so will break out the crockpot and do some big batches of stuff. :)

      Good luck on your run!

  • Congrats on your new bed purchase! I’m seeing Gone Girl tonight! And I hate going to the movie theater, but I’m going with a friend and we both read the book. I heard the movie was good :)

  • You are right that a new bed can make all of the diffrence in the world. We bought a new bed last winter and my back and hips have been thanking me ever since. Like you I had been dealing with poor sleep, back and hip problems. In my case I thought it was something that happened from having babies and I would just have to deal with it. Thankfully it was the 10 year old bd that was causing all of the pain and within a week I was feeling like a whole new person!

  • Congrats on the new be as very little beats a good night of sleep! We bought a new mattress for our platform bed this summer and it feels so good! Worth every penny and managed to get a very good deal at Sears. This week-end it’s a visit to the hair salon, which is a rare occurrence and attending a dinner party. Enjoy the comedy show and movie night Cait.

  • Enjoy your movie! And yay for sleeping well!

My plans are sleeping in because not working yay! And starting the big house clean because it turns out we’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner next Sunday. I’m only slightly stressed about this because I know I’ll be working part if not all of the weekend (it’s the second busiest time right behind Christmas). On the plus side the boyfriend’s parents are covering part of the cost of the meal so yay!

    • Wow, nice to have a weekend off! And Thanksgiving/holidays are always a little stressful, but it’ll be nice once you’re all around that table together :)

  • I’m jealous about your new bed. I’ve been debating replacing mine but I’d want a larger one and I just don’t have room for it right now. I am super glad you finally took the plunge. Hopefully the bed and the pain specialist will help you feel a lot better.

My week was very busy. I’m still not unpacked. So that’s the big plan this weekend. I work tomorrow night but other than that I’ll be unpacking.

    • Thanks, Trista. And good luck unpacking! Things always feel better once you’re done/settled in.

      • I got so much done this weekend. This new place is going to be so much more cozy than my last. So far I’ve managed to keep myself from buying “all the things” for my new place. lol

  • I am so happy you finally got a new bed! Every grown Girl needs a nice bed. ;) Gone Girl continues to get such rave reviews – I can’t wait to see it with you tomorrow! xo

  • When we moved from Vancouver to Toronto in June, we bought a brand new bed too. It was definitely expensive, but one of the best purchases ever after sleeping in total discomfort for more than two years.

It’s so lovely to have a proper bed and wake up feeling rested in the morning.

No regrets about spending that money.

    Congrats on your investment!

  • I got a new bed when I moved into my house 2 years ago (as of next week). It really helped me sleep better too. I try to remember to “flip it” about once a month so i can get as much life out of it as possible. Excited for your new bed! Hope you love it!

    • Yes, I must remember to do that! I think I’ll try to remember to do it around the 1st of every month – easy number should make it easier to remember?

  • Hi Cait! Here also is my congratulations to you on the purchase of your new bed. Not only that but I’m quite impressed on how you sacrificed and saved up over the months to buy it outright. It’s the only way to go to live a debt free life. A lot of people would have taken the easy way out and bought it on credit.

As you know, my week’s been busy as I continue to complete my house painting project (expect to finish the last of it sometime next week). Today however I digressed into other house improvement chores – bathroom sink plumbing upgrade maintenance and installing new safety heavy duty towel rack bars. Who says that retirement living is just all about goofing off! :-)

    • I can’t deny, I still felt weird about buying it, knowing I wasn’t going to pay off my card until later in the week… but I could’ve pulled from other savings, if I’d really wanted to. Anyway, 75% was saved up, and now it’s paid off and all mine. So, that’s not too bad :)

And holy jeez, you’re not kidding. Do you ever take a break? haha

  • You know, people hardly ever have to buy a bed. You’d think that the mattress stores would have terrible customer service because of that lack of (immediate) repeat business, but I’ve only ever heard good things about Sleep Country (and various stores have been good to me too over the years).

    • I have zero complaints about my experience! They were so friendly and helpful. I never felt pressured. Actually, the salesman kept showing me cheaper beds, even though I knew this was the one I wanted, haha.

  • That’s an awesome amount you saved in less than three months! It sounds like it went to good use, and I think you deserve a new bed to hopefully lessen any back pain. I purchased a new bed a little over 2 years ago, but I’ve been tossing and turning a lot lately. I think it’s time to rotate it around. Thanks for the idea – somehow, I didn’t realize I should be doing that. Oops! Enjoy your weekend!

    • Oh no! Yes, rotate it for sure. I don’t know that I’ll remember to do it once/month, but I’ll certainly try.

      Have a nice weekend, Erin!

  • Good for you Cait! There are a few things in life I can’t skimp on, my bed being one of them, just not worth it. Quality bed and quality bedding are worth every. single. penny you spend on it! I hope you enjoy it!

    • Thanks, lady! It’s only been 2 nights, but I can already say I’m sleeping better. I even slept in this morning, which never ever happens!

  • Enjoy you new bed. There is something wonderful about a great new mattress. We got our new one Feb. 2013 – got a king at half price because we bought the demo model (cost us $1400).

This weekend is our family Thanksgiving. Should be fun.

    • Dang, that’s a great price for a king-sized bed! Go you guys. And Happy Early Thanksgiving :)

  • I have hip and back pain too and am in the market for a new bed. My current mattress set is about 15 years old!!! Eek! Not comfortable at all. What kind of mattress did you buy? I’ve never had a pillow top, favouring a very firm mattress usually, so I’m just wondering how you like it.
