TGIF: Oh, Hello Summer Weather

Well, if this past week is any indication of what the next year is going to be like, I have to say… 29 looks goooood! No, but in all seriousness, I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday/week.

It started with our girls’ weekend in Whistler. We left on Saturday morning and got to Cheakamus Lake (just 8km south of Whistler Village) around 11:30 a.m. The road to where our hike started was something more fit for a 4×4, not my little Bandit, but he made his way there and back (with a few bumps along the way!). We hiked 14km (25,000 steps for my Fitbit friends!) of this trail, saw the most beautiful turquoise water I’d ever seen and were back at my car around 2:30 p.m.

From there, we went up to Whistler Village, checked into our hotel, walked around the village and went out for dinner. After that, we spent an hour or two in our hotel’s rooftop hot tub. By 11:00 p.m., I was so relaxed that I had to crawl into (our King size) bed. I slept for 8 hours and woke up remembering why sober birthdays are now the best: no hangovers! We went out for breakfast that morning, but it started pouring down with rain around 11 a.m., so we left shortly after that. Even though it was a quick trip, I had so much fun and am so grateful my girlfriends made the trip over from Victoria. <3

The rest of the week was just nice and relaxing. I worked out three mornings and nearly finished a huge work project that’s been ongoing since April, but then spent all my evenings on my deck or out walking around Port Moody with friends. It was hot again all week – between 28-32°C (82-90°F) every day – but it wasn’t as gross/sticky as it was last week. And with summer weather comes more walks along the water, BBQs, ice cream and lake days. Bring it on!

The low of my week was just that my lower back hurt a little more than usual, so I had to ice it every day. My appointment with the sports medicine doctor I’ve been waiting to see for two months is next week. I really hope he has some new insight/ideas, as he’s likely my last shot at nixing this residual pain.

The high of my week was hanging out with Daisy on Wednesday night! I made black bean quesadillas and homemade guacamole for dinner, she brought cheesecake and we celebrated my birthday/her new job/her upcoming wedding. Congrats again, Daisy!

A blog post I loved was The American Dream Does Not Cost $130,000/year. It’s a smart and thoughtful rebuttal to a story that was published in USA Today, and discusses how numbers can breed discontent.

The best money I spent was $5.35 on two scoops (Chai Spice + Salted Caramel) of Rocky Point Ice Cream last night. This adventure also included a 5K walk with a friend and her pup. <3

My plans this weekend include decluttering tonight, going for a long walk with a friend tomorrow and going for another long walk with my friend Kasey on Sunday. It’s supposed to be 32-34°C in Vancouver all weekend, friends, so make sure you slather on some sunscreen and stay hydrated!

How was your week? What are you up to this weekend?

  • Happy Friday!

    This week was great :)

We’re heading up to Balsam Lake Provincial Park after work with my brother and SIL for a camping weekend, can’t wait!

I spent a couple hours last night prepping healthy foods to bring.

    Have a great weekend!

    • Bah! This comment answered the question I sent you via email, haha. Well… kinda. Anyway, have an amazing weekend, Dayle!

  • Glad you had an awesome birthday!

My week was pretty good aside from the heat. As much as I like it being warm here (a nice respite from winter) it makes my place really hot. All of our windows face south so yeah the house gets freaking hot.

Plans for the weekend are work! Seriously working 6am-2pm on Saturday and Sunday. My weekend is actually going to be Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday will be great as I’m going for a massage. Which I pay for but will get the money back through my boyfriend’s insurance.

    • Ohhh, I hear you. Despite being born in the summer, it’s not my favourite season. I’ll soak up a little sun here and there, but I much prefer fall. Stay cool! :P

  • Cait!
I came across your instagram from a mutual friend (which led me to your blog) and after a week of faithfully reading your previous posts I am finally caught up! You have inspired me to take control of my finances and work towards saving for mine and my family’s future. Thank you!

    • Jade! That’s so exciting. I’m happy my posts have inspired you. Good luck with the goals you set. :)

  • TGIF Cait!

Actually, I used to say that phrase when I was still working but, since retiring, the entire week just kinda rolls along from day to day, some days being busy others spent just goofing off!

Looks like you enjoyed a great time with your friends on your birthday. Did you have any b/day cake, blow out 29 candles and make a wish ( perhaps to become an early millionaire and retire early)? :-)

My week was productive – painted another room in the house, helped a neighbour move some furniture, mowed my lawn and my next door (widow) neighbour’s lawn, and then goofed off this afternoon to go play bingo with my wife and her mom! Her mom won $$$, I didn’t.

This weekend our kids drop over to help celebrate my wife’s b/day. Should be fun!

    Enjoy your weekend.

    • Haha, no birthday cake or candles… but I did eat a lot of cheesecake this week! Bad bad bad (but good good good).

Sounds like a really productive week! Have fun with the family this weekend. :)

  • Hey good to see you’re enjoy your trip, it’s good to have a relaxing day once in awhile. My weekend is the same as always at work. I can’t wait until I go vacation so I can actually sleep in for once. Hasn’t sleep in for a long time.

  • My week was pretty good and full of ups and downs, too…but I would say that I’m feeling inspired to get back into regular blogging again, really figuring out a solid plan to attack my last debt, which is student loans…AND I made a HUGE batch of my homemade powdered laundry soap…so I”m feeling like a farmgirl rockstar….even though I live in the city…plus it’s economical and I just love making my own cleaning supplies, anyways :)

I have work this week. I’m going to a movie with a friend on Wednesday….we both have the day off and we decided to have a movie junk food lunch :)

Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather ;)

    • Ok, is it easy to make laundry soap!? Last week, I said I wasn’t going to try that, but you just made me more curious about it!

      Thanks for the support, Heather!

      • Hi Cait,
Yes, it’s totally easy…but I have only ever made the powdered version. There are liquid versions available….but I prefer the powder version myself. Here’s a link to a blog post I did back in 2010 about this. some of the photos are missing, because I had run out of storage space on Google and I refused to pay for more space. So I deleted unnecessary photos. I am going to write a new blog post in the next few weeks, but I’v got to find my purchase receipts for the ingredients, so that I can do a cost breakdown.

Let me know what questions you have. I’ll be happy to help as much as possible. Here’s the link to that blog post:

I haven’t been bloggin on a regular basis since February…lots going on in my persona life…BUT I’m feeling inspired to write again…so I’m going to focus on that…and making a budget…

Anyways, let me know if you try it and what questions you have, please email me. I’ll be happy to help to the best of my ability :)

Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :) :) :)

  • Belated Happy Birthday, Cait! I’m glad you enjoyed your special day. My family and I also had a very fun weekend at the beach. T’was my first time to try scuba diving! Also heard about Daisy’s big day… I feel excited for her! ;)

    • Scuba diving!? Nicely done, Alicia! I’m a strong swimmer but get a little claustraphic, so I don’t know if I’ll ever try that myself – but it seems like it’d be fun. :)
