TGIF: On the Right Track

snow in victoria

For the past 7 days, everything in my life has felt… right. It started when I delivered my presentation last Friday. All week, I had been stressing out about memorizing it, so I wouldn’t blank on stage. When I finally got up there, I realized I’d been worrying for nothing; it was my story to tell, and I knew it better than anyone. It helped to have a few friendly faces in the crowd, of course, but the audience clapped and cheered after a couple of my slides (especially the one where I talked about how personal finance should be taught in school). I’ve been on a high ever since, thinking about next steps for a number of projects on my back burner…

The next morning, I woke up early and jumped on the first ferry to Victoria. Since being here, my days have been filled with celebrations (including my friend’s bridal shower and Baby Sis’ birthday), coffee and dinner dates with friends, visits with the fam, extra cuddles with the dogs and a couple of workouts. Most of these things happen every time I come home, but something about this visit, in particular, has left me feeling extra grateful for the incredible people in my life.

It’s not always easy to maintain long distance friendships; in some ways, they require even more attention. I feel extremely lucky that I can say my friends in Victoria are all people I have known – and plan to know – for a lifetime. We may not live in the same city anymore, but everyone understands and supports why I had to leave (for my career). And their warm welcomes each time I return let me know that home will always be here in Victoria. Until next time, there’s more work to be done… <3

The low of my week was nothing really. Perhaps just getting stuck in the snow and having to leave my car on the side of the road overnight. But that led to a fun sleepover / snow day with friends and their kids.

The high of my week was going to the dentist for the first time in 18 months (bleh, I know) and not having any cavities. It’s a toothbrush/floss miracle!

A blog post I loved was 10 Painfully Obvious Truths Everyone Forgets Too Soon. I’m happy Bridget shared this on Facebook, because I needed to be reminded about a few of these truths this week.

The best money I spent was $6.25 to go to the gym with my workout buddy here.

My plans this weekend include having dinner with a friend tonight, going up island to see my aunt tomorrow, seeing a couple more friends and then heading back to Port Moody on Sunday afternoon.

How was your week? What are you up to this weekend?

  • Hi Cait!

I’m really glad to hear things are going well and feeling good for you! Sounds like you had a nice week at home, it’s always a great feeling to spend time with your loved ones. I agree that long distance relationships do require more dedication to maintain, but it is important, especially with family.

My week was good! Busy, so it went by fast, dentist appt, massage appt, lawyer appt, my usual gym, work, school work, etc. Yesterday I took time away from everything (gym, and I skipped volleyball) to hang out with new friend because I hadn’t seen him all week and I won’t see him this weekend because he’s working nights. It was nice to disconnect from everything and spend some time together making a yummy dinner and watching Breaking Bad :)

This weekend — tonight I’m going to the Lady A concet at the ACC with some friends. Tomorrow I’m working in the afternoon, and Sunday I will be catching up on housework, having dinner with my family, and reading my book!

    Have a great weekend.

    • Sounds like a great week, Dayle! I’m a little jealous of your date night on the couch, hehe. How was Lady Antebellum!? (I’m so jealous you saw them!) And which book are you reading right now?

  • I LOVE weeks like that, where everything just falls into place (one way you can trick yourself to have that feeling all the time is to adopt a very zen buddhist outlook and chant, “everything happens exactly as its supposed to, exactly how its supposed to, and for all the reasons its supposed to”, which allows you to cloak bad experiences in optimism)

Thanks for the link-back =) that was one of the best articles I’ve found on the web EVER. Need to schedule to read it on a monthly or bi-annual basis so I don’t forget those lessons!

  • Im so very happy you had an awesome time back home with friends and family!!
that is great and i am sure you needed the TLC…in regards to the ARE being careful RIGHT?? i hope so! I had signed up to be a parent helper for the Girls on Track and that has been a little bit of a motivator to get moving myself..gotta keep up with these middle schooler(s) included 2 of my girls…

    • Oh yea, my workouts are barely workouts, in my opinion. I make sure to break a sweat, but I still can’t push myself like I used to.

Girls on Track would be really fun to be a part of. :)

    • Yep! We don’t get snow very often over here… hence wearing rain boots in the snow, haha. Gotta take what we can get!

  • I went to the dentist this morning for the first time in 3 years and had no cavities! Such a huge relief on so many levels. (Enough of a relief to inspire me to comment on your blog for the first time. :) )

I live in Abbotsford and the snow last weekend was craaazy! The Lower Mainland actually looked a bit like the rest of Canada for once.

    • Ahhh, that’s awesome, Becky! Congrats to us both then, hehe.

And yes, it was! I missed what was on the mainland, but stayed up at Shawnigan Lake last weekend and my friends got at least a foot of snow, if not more.

    • Such a good post! Like Bridget said, I need to bookmark it now and share it again in the future.

  • Hi Cait, I’m glad to hear that your presentation went well!

Thanks for sharing that article, it was a great read. Have a great weekend!

  • Sounds like you are having a wonderful time in Victoria! Enjoy spending time with your family and friends, you cannot put a price on that! I live away from home too and I miss my family and friends so much, it feels great to go home for a visit and I cannot wait till I get to go next! :P
