TGIF: Four-Eyed Flanders

cait flanders

Oh, hey guys. Guess what the eye doctor told me last weekend? Are you looking at the picture of me in this post? Ugghhh, yes! I needed glasses!

The minute I sat in the chair and started reading lines of text, I knew the verdict was in. With a few quick turns, Ns were revealed to be Zs, and my precious 20/20 vision was gone. I can’t really say I was surprised… I spend so much freaking time in front of my laptop that it had to happen eventually, right? And the minute I realized I was squinting on a daily basis, I knew I had to spend the cash ($115) to get my eyes checked. (I did say I was going to take control of my health this year!)

Money well spent, I suppose – as was the money I spent purchasing a pair of glasses online, versus the hundreds of dollars I would’ve spent on a pair in the store. I ordered these Saturday evening and had them on my face Tuesday afternoon. I don’t need to wear them 24/7 – just while working on the computer, reading or driving. Ok, so for me, that’s basically 24/7, haha. Anyway, with the exception of a few small headaches, the entire process has been pretty seamless. And now I’m just another four-eyed Flanders!

The low of my week was nothing. Seriously, no complaints. It was a good week. :)

The high of my week was reconnecting with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while, and putting a bunch of coffee and brunch dates into my calendar for the rest of this month. But the best part of my week will probably happen tonight! (See weekend plans.)

A post I loved was So Long, FOMO – Here’s Why 2014 Will Be Year Of The JOMO. One thing the article failed to mention was how money could be playing a part in this little backlash movement. I’d guess people also want to (and subsequently will) save more of their hard-earned dollars.

The best money I spent was $17.03 for my glasses. Not bad, eh!? Gotta love Clearly Contacts’ First Pair Free promotion! (I just had to pay for taxes and shipping.)

My plans this weekend include hanging out with my good friend / workout buddy! She’s here from Victoria for tonight/tomorrow, and I can’t wait to show her around, go on the hunt for some good pho… and yes, squeeze in a workout together!

How was your week? What are you up to this weekend?

  • My fiance got his glasses from Clearly Contacts last year – pretty darn good for $39 (he paid for scratch-proofing as well). It was nice on the budget because he didn’t have vision care at the time.

I’ve worn glasses since I was 15. I needed them for class (couldn’t see the board without headaches) and then when I got to university (aka, much larger rooms) I really needed them for lectures. I also need them for driving, but honestly only at night or when it’s rainy, etc.

My week was busy. I work in a satellite office and head office was here, so it made my routine change pretty dramatically. Can’t wait for the weekend :)

    • It’s interesting to hear other people’s experiences w/ glasses. Everyone in my family wears them, but all got them at different ages and for different reasons. I’m happy I don’t need them 24/7, but it’s still an adjustment!

Hope you’re enjoying your weekend. :)

  • Welcome to the club, Cait! Over the years, what with the constant computer work that I’ve done, I finally needed to get glasses for that stuff. In addition, however, I also needed to get a different pair for driving, which all started after I used to daily drive from Toronto to Hamilton and back (year round) for 3 years on business. All that late night highway driving in all kinds of summer / winter weather was what did it. Oddly enough, however, I find that I still prefer to read newspapers and hardcover / softcover books without any glasses.

My week wasn’t too bad – lots of ice chopping (and more snow shoveling coming up this morning – yuck!), along with a visit the other day to my friendly urologist (to chit chat about my latest kidney stone adventures).

This weekend – a train trip to Montreal to spend a week visiting my 93 y/o mom (who, hopefully, won’t have too many “joe job” tasks lined up for moi!)

Then later back to Toronto to check out my new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader that should arrive soon. After 3 years of heavy use, the other day my old Kindle died and went to e-reader heaven! :-)

  • Wow, I’ve heard good things about Clearly Contact’s before but was hesitant to try them. Instead I paid the $100 or so to replace the lenses in my current frames. (But my exam was covered, so I guess it balanced out?) I know I have eye coverage with my current job, but I’ll keep this place in mind for next time.

PS. Welcome to the 4-Eyes Club :)

  • Welcome to the club! You’ll be a true member when you’re so tired you get into the shower still wearing them and don’t even realise you still have them on lol x

  • Great deal on the glasses! I’ve contemplated trying that for mine last time I got glasses but then I was told that I’d need prisms built in to correct for a weak eye I just went with buying in store. Next time I’ll contact them and see if they can do prisms.

  • I get my contacts from Clearly Contacts but I haven’t ordered glasses there yet. I don’t think I’d want to order them without being able to try them on. But I’m pretty sure they have a good return policy.

The high of my week plus the best money I spent was the new dress I picked up at work. I’m so glad the spring clothes are coming out. Even though I have a 50% discount at work I realize I spend a lot more clothes than I would if I wasn’t working there because I’m faced with all the beautiful clothing every time I walk in to work.

The low of my week was a disparaging remark made by a colleague. Even though I didn’t directly hear it a colleague stood up for me. We don’t have clerical staff in our office and this person treats me as his secretary when I’m a data analyst.

Plans for the weekend: Tonight I’ll be catching up on cleaning. It’s been a busy week with two jobs and school. Tomorrow my girlfriends are coming over for movies and munchies after I get off work. Sunday I’m going to the theatre to see The Wolf of Wall Street and Sunday night I’ll be doing my readings for class Monday night.

    • I saw The Wolf of Wall Street last night! So intense. Enjoy!

And definitely look at CC, even if only for the first pair free promo. They list all the measurements, so if you can measure any pair that you own/like, you should be able to find a pair that’ll fit.

  • I saw this photo show up on Instagram and just thought it was to capture your mood that day. Had no idea they are your first pair of glasses – they totally suit you!

I fear the loss of 20/20 is on the horizon for me too… Although I got my eyes checked not too long ago and came out glasses-free. Still, I hear you with staring at the screen all day. Constantly reminding myself to take body breaks (stretch/move/walk) and to give my eyes a rest.

    • Thanks! And yea, I tried taking breaks for a long time, but it just wasn’t good enough. I knew the minute I couldn’t read street signs while driving that I was in trouble…

  • My wife always complains about having to wear her glasses. I always tell her that they look cute and she should wear them more often. After 17 years of marriage you would think that she would believe me by now. :)

  • Oh glasses. The bane of my existence. LOL. I’ve needed them for years. I need mine for distance but if I wear them when I’m working on a computer I can’t see anything. It’s really bad if I’m in a workshop (like yesterday). Needed the glasses to see what was happening on the screen, couldn’t wear them to work on the computers in front of us. I do the flip thing – a lot.

The high of my week – well I got four good nights sleep in a row (before last night – it’s 4:49 a.m. as I post this).

The low? It’s 4:49 a.m. as I post this. I see an afternoon nap being added to my weekend plans.

Plans for the weekend? Adding said nap – oh and it’s Hockey Day in Canada so I’ll be watching so I’ll be watching those games.

    • Four nights of solid sleep sounds good to me! I’m obviously a little jealous of that. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

  • Hey there!
I love the new specs :)
My week was good, pretty uneventful, made those granola bars we were chatting about and I am basically in love with them.
For the weekend, last night was early to bed, I’m at work this morning for a little OT.
Going straight to the gym from here, home for a nap, then a Breaking Bad mini-marathon with ‘new friend’ followed by a dinner date! So excited :)
    Have a super weekend!

  • Your glasses look great on you. What a steal!

Our week had a lot of good news on the small business front — namely, there are businesses genuinely interested in our product. It’s frustrating because money isn’t rolling in yet, but hopefully the good news will lead to some cash next month!

I also have the super exciting task of organizing my stockpile of food and toiletries this weekend. It’s the last step in cleaning out our garage and it’s obvious, because the rest of the garage looks awesome and my stockpile is a mess.

  • The glasses look great! I use Clearly Contacts for my contact lenses, I’d love to use them for glasses but my prescription is insane which equals expensive. I’ve tried to get the freebie pairs from them but it always comes out to $300-500 because of my near blindness LOL!

  • You picked a nice pair of frames! Very flattering :)

I wore glasses and contacts for most of my life. Finally about 2 years ago my condition had gotten so bad and my prescription so extreme (I had reached a point where I could only wear hard contacts and had never been able to wear disposables) that they thought I had a degenerative eye disease. Thankfully I didn’t but that was the last push I needed. I had lasik eye surgery done 6 months later and I still consider it to be one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

  • I wore glasses since i was 2 yr’s old..then FINALLY went to contacts @ 16..had THOSE until i was 26 and got lasik…I LOVED IT…was the best $$$ i ever more glasses no more contacts and solution and blah blah!! but like all things your eyes do “age” and 40 i could use some help again….sigh..oh well, I am hoping to go the lasik route if i can afford it..(probably not) or go contacts…preferably..just not glasses again!!!

  • Ditto on Lasik

Was the best thing I ever did. I should have done it years ago. Well worth the cost even if depleted my savings.

Even after 4 months, I still try to take my glasses off when putting sunglass on or think I have them on when I head into the shower.

  • Yay for glasses. I’ve had to wear mine full time for about two years now…. they annoy me! I tried contacts for the first time in December and they’re not too bad actually. The thing is, I sort of expected it to be “oh this is amazing, I can see”… but it’s more like I can just see the way that I expected I can, because I forget that my eyes are useless. I am going to be horribly blind by the time I’m forty at this rate!
