What Would You Get if You Won a $700 Best Buy Gift Card?

Sorry… I’m not asking because I’m giving one away. I’m asking because I won a $700 Best Buy Gift Card yesterday, and this is the question everyone keeps asking me!

Here’s the craziest part of that last sentence: I almost never enter giveaways on websites. Sure, I’ve thrown my name into a few blog contests for Amazon gift cards, iPad minis, etc. But, for the most part, I ignore those blog posts and move onto reading something else.

On the weekend, however, I saw a tweet that mentioned Techvibe’s 2012 Holiday Giveaway. The tweet said you could enter to win all seven days’ worth of giveaways (which is actually not true – you could just enter for each day’s individual giveaway. Anyway…). Before climbing out of bed to make coffee, I quickly posted a comment on each day’s post, closed my browser, and left it at that.

Yesterday afternoon, I was both shocked and surprised to see a tweet from Techvibes:

How amazing is that!?

So, what am I going to buy? A number of people have suggested an iPad, but I’m honestly not the slightest bit interested in that. First, because I just got a new MacBook Pro in October. Second, I don’t need one. And while it would be nice to blow my prize money on something “fun”, I’m going to (big surprise) put it towards things I actually need.

Don’t forget: I just moved to Toronto a few months ago. While I’m still living at Roomie’s place, I should have a place of my own by February or March. And guess what I’ll be moving in with? Clothes. That’s it! But I’m going to need a whole lot more than that.

My first purchase has to be a bed, bedding, and some towels. After that, I need to setup my kitchen. I’ve been stressing about how much this is all going to cost… but now I don’t have to.

Not only does Best Buy sell big appliances, they sell small kitchen appliances too. And, after buying a small TV (small because I’ll only be able to afford a tiny bachelor here), I’m going to spend the rest of my gift card on the things I’ll use most in my new kitchen:

(1) LG 32″ LED HDTV ($329.99 + recycling fee)

(2) Hamilton Beach Kettle ($49.99)

(3) Hamilton Beach Food Processor ($69.99)

(4) Hamilton Beach Single Blender ($19.99)

(5) Hamilton Beach Toaster Oven ($49.99)

(6) T-fal 9-Piece Cookware Set ($99.99)

At regular retail prices, I could buy all of this for about $730 incl. taxes and the recycling fee for the TV. If I get the gift card in time, and anything goes on sale, I might order a few things online on Boxing Day. Otherwise, I’ll wait until moving day. Because, I’ll have basically nothing else to move in…

Or maybe I’ll just say screw it to everything and buy myself this amazing Breville Barista Express Coffee Machine ($699.99)!

(Ok, now that’s something I want… in my dreams!)

Thank you again to Techvibes and Best Buy for the opportunity to enter and win this contest! You have no idea how much it means to have this gift card help with my 2013 budget.

What would you get if you won a $700 Best Buy Gift Card?

  • Your list looks pretty fun to me! The TV because well, what isn’t fun about a new HD LED TV? The rest of the stuff is kitchen stuff and I LOVE cooking so my list would probably look pretty similar.

For me, I’d dump the coffee pot (don’t drink coffee) and the toaster oven (I’m way too impatient for those things.)

I’d take the left over $ and upgrade the cookware set. I love me some Calphalon. That’s right, I love pots and pans……and I’m secure in my manhood.

  • Congratulations Cait!! If I had the GC I’d look into getting a new computer or a sound bar for our television. I hope you share with us what your final choice was… it pays to enter and that’s why some people live for it day in and day out! We’ve won contests before but never like you have! Cheers Mr.CBB

    • I will definitely share it all, when I go shopping! Which won’t be until sometime in the new year, I’m sure.

  • Cait I think your choices of small appliances are great. Getting a handful of small appliances is more practical and fun to be able to stock your new place in the spring with nice, brand new appliances. Plus you’ve got the tv for entertainment. I actually still have the amazon gift card I won in your first giveway and am waiting to make a satisfying purchase. I was going to go with the microphone headphones for my smartphone but decided I could live without it right now.

  • Congrats on winning the gift card! I think it’s very smart of you to get practical items that you need, along with a few fun items as well. That will definitely help save some money when you move into your new place.

If I won the gift card, my first purchase would be a Dyson vacuum. I have a small one, but would love to have a bigger one with more accessories. Then I would probably buy several smaller items.

    • I secretly thought about a Dyson, as well… but I just don’t need one, haha. Would be a great purchase, though!

  • That’s AMAZING! Congrats!

I’d probably buy myself a new laptop… I don’t really need a new one just yet, but it’s getting close to that point. I don’t really need anything else…

  • That’s awesome you won the giftcard! It’s awesome you’ll be able to put it towards stuff you need. My personal favorite is the toaster oven. I have one and I love mine. Perfect for small families or single people. My husband and I use ours all the time.

I can’t blame you for wanting to spend it all on a Coffee Machine!

  • Oh my god, that is so awesome! Congratulations on such a lucrative stroke of luck! You’ve had quite a year, and this is a really great way to end it.

The only thing on your list that I question is…food processor. Almost no one I know uses theirs because it’s such a pain to pull out, put away, and clean. I only have one because it came as an attachment to the cheapest glass blender I could find, but I’ve never used it. So if you’ve never used a food processor, I’d hold off on that, or maybe get something like what I have. Great for a small kitchen :)

Also…toaster oven. The number of times I’ve gotten one as a “kitchen staple” and found myself using it once a month at best is tragic. Okay, so maybe I’m being melodramatic, but seriously – if you don’t use it often, you’re wasting limited countertop real estate, or you’re pulling it out and putting it away (which sucks with crumb trays). For the occasional use, I just use a high setting on my regular oven and put the food at the top, e.g. melting cheese on a sandwich. Perhaps not energy-efficient, but in my last NYC apartment I had 4 sq ft of counterspace, and half of it was taken up by the microwave.

If you like homemade espresso drinks, I got a deLonghi steam one about 5 months ago that I love – it was $85 on Amazon. I love love love it!

Now…it the $700 were mine…well I see they have a lot of non-electronic categories now. I’d get some new luggage (I hate my carry-on!) along with a 42″ flatscreen TV of some sort :)

    • I hear your concerns on the food processor but, as I’m a vegetarian, they are a great tool for making homemade veggie burgers, dips, etc.! And thanks for the suggestion on the deLonghi espresso machine!

  • That’s an awesome feeling winning something like that. I won a 500 gift card last year. For me personally, I just kind of hang on to it until I know exactly what I want to buy. I think you get caught up in the rush of winning. But in any case, congrats!!

    • Oh, I won’t be buying anytime soon. Not until I move out. But it’s easy to know what you need, ahead of time. Where was the $500 for!?

  • Seriously that is AMAZING that you won that gift card! Nice score! It’s also great that you need so much useful stuff, that you won’t need to go blow it on stuff that you don’t need but can now afford.

If I were to win, I think I’d get a Nexus 7, an external hard drive, and a new blender.

    • Thanks, Jordann! Ahhh, I need a new external hard drive, as well. That might be added to the list (and even purchased first).

  • That’s awesome Cait!

I might splurge for the iPad or put it toward a new receiver for our sound system. I have all the kitchen stuffs I need. I have a small food processor. I didn’t want a big one because I wanted some counter space. I asked for a 3 cup one for Christmas several years ago and the boyfriend’s parents got it for me (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.ca/product.asp?SKU=12400330&RN=4435&). I use it for chopping onions, garlic, salad dressings and small batches of guacamole. For soups and things I either use my Immersion blender (no need to try and transfer hot liquids) or I’ll dig out my blender.

  • WHAT? No iPad? We can no longer be BBF (best blogger friends).

Okay just kidding. I love your list! As I was reading it I was thinking, “Of course Cait would make a practical list of stuff she needs”. But I would totally do the same thing. However, that coffee machine is pretty tempting and as a coffee girl myself, I know that would be hard to resist. Can’t wait till you get your card and can start buying some awesome stuff! Congrats you lucky girl :P

    • Hahaha… I’ve been blacklisted!

The espresso machine is so so so tempting! But I know I need a few things more than that. Although… it would help my Starbucks budget go down! haha

      Thanks, Carrie :)

  • Congrats! What a fun surprise!!

Are there any electronic gadgets/gizmos that you would like to have to help you while you’re doing the PF workout? Like bluetooth headphones, an Ipod holder or some new itunes material?

    Have fun choosing!

    • Ohhh, good thinking, Andi! But I’m actually ok on that front, I think. It was definitely a nice surprise :)

  • Congratulations, Cait! That is so amazing! And how fortunate that you won before your move!

I definitely like the idea of stocking your kitchen with the gift card. Since we already have everything we need in the kitchen, I’d use the gift card to buy something crazy for Christmas for David, ha. He joked that the new living room is so big he won’t be able to see his TV from the couch, so I think I’d use it to buy a ridiculous TV for him. Can you imagine? It would be like Christmas mornings as a child! He’d walk out of the bedroom to the tree and BOOM! there’s this 50″ TV with a big red bow on it.

Responsible Katie would hoard the gift card until something came up we did need. Or I’d use it to buy a new oven since the oven in the house is retro. But this is fun fantasy hypothetical scenario, so I’m sticking with the TV idea. ;)

    • Hahaha, you are so cute for thinking of using it on something for David. But wait… you’d be using that TV too, missy! ;)

  • Who-hoo! Congrats! After from jumping around like a crazy person, I would probably look at getting one of those fancy dyson vacuum cleaners and a kettle that you can set the temperature on. Oh, and the Indiana Jones trilogy on blu-ray.

  • Awesome!! Congrats!

I would totally get (3) and (4). My Magic Bullet has seen better days and I think that it’s about to die on my soon. I never saw the use for both a food processor and a blender, but I now see the light.

  • It is nice to see that you are using it to get things you actually need/want. I like your list. I don’t think I would have that much control. I would probably spend it on an ipad or something that I really have no intention on purchasing on my own. Heck, it is money you weren’t expecting, so why not waste it on a want?

    • I’ll be honest: I think about buying a Nikon D3100 pretty much everyday! But it’ll be better not to have to save up for a TV and kitchen appliances… Responsible Cait wins again, lol.

  • SCORE! That’s awesome, Merry Christmas to you! That’s also great that they sell small appliances, I had no idea. I’d probably buy one of those water/shock/dust proof cameras. My last one’s face plate doesn’t stay on, after an unfortunate confrontation with pavement in Argentina. I have a knack for wrecking digital cameras.

    • Most of them are only sold online, so I’d have to ship them to my place or the store. But it is nice to know it’s an option, eh?

  • Smart cookie you are on buying things you would actually use :) $700 is enough to buy something substanstial and your list looks great!
I would have probably put it towards purchasing a newer laptop as my current one is over 4 years old and it’s just not working as well as I’d like it to.

I have $400 in gift cards from Macy’s that we received as wedding gifts and we’re saving it up for when we get our home to help with furnishing it.

  • Way to go! That is great news.

Get everything on your list – that is an especially great TV. But wait until boxing day if you can. Then you may have a little more left over!

  • Awesome, congratulations!

A note about the espresso maker, there’s a weird disparity between the cheap ones and the mid-range and high-end. That one you’ve listed is only incrementally better than some of the cheaper options, I’d go lower or save until you can get a REAL one. It’s not worth it.

That said, if you have any carpet, you might need a real vacuum too!

    • Thanks, Danielle! I honestly don’t know that I’ll ever buy an espresso machine… maybe in my dreams! But I’d probably buy something cheap, if I ever did!

  • Wow that’s great! If I won I’d buy a new laptop b/c mine is on the out and a new monitor for hubby’s main computer b/c I’m convinced it’s giving him radiation burns on his face…or maybe I’d sell it for like 650 and take the cash…
