November 2012 Budget & Goals

November 1, 2012

Ahhh, November… a new month, a new budget! How dorky is it that the 1st of every month feels like the beginning of something new? Maybe I’m just in a good mood because of my ridiculous love for the holidays and everything starts happening in November… (haters, don’t hate!)

Alright, Christmas talk aside, let’s look at this month’s budget. I think what I’m most excited about with these numbers is that 49% of my budget is going towards both debt repayment (31.5%) and savings (17.5%). That gives me 51% to live/play with – sounds easy enough, right?

The only number I see myself going over on is the Birthday/Christmas budget. Why? Because, if you were reading last year, you know I always aim to finish my Christmas shopping by December 1st. I don’t think I’ll be buying many presents this year but there will be a few purchased this month. It’s also Baby Bro’s birthday in a couple weeks and I want to send him a little something from Toronto in the mail!

Other goals for this month:

  • Track my spending and continue posting weekly spending reports
  • Join GoodLife Fitness (I will do this, I swear!)
  • Continue counting calories on Lose It!
  • Workout at least 3x per week
  • Participate in #NaNoWriMo (A post will need to be dedicated to this!)

What do you have planned for this month?

“What do you have planned for this month?”

Probably similar to you, Cait. Start shopping for Christmas. Getting the house ready for winter – yardwork, indoor cleaning, car mtce. – the usual yearly stuff.

In looking at your November budget, it looks good. I would guess though that, if anything, you might exceed your Misc./Cash budget (given this time of year), unless you reduce your Restaurant budget down a tad. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth to you. All in all though, a very achievable budget. Well done.

I’d say your opinion is fairly accurate, haha. Eating out less is a huge goal of mine… but being able to find at least a couple gifts in Toronto that I can bring back home to my family is another. Anyway, we’ll see, I guess! Good luck prepping the house for winter.

One thing is to buckle down with my spending! Good luck with your goals!

    • Cait November 1, 2012 at 9:38 pm

      You can do it, T!

  • Deena Dollars November 1, 2012 at 10:18 am

Looks awesome, Cait! What is the “future apartment” line for? I sense exciting news of some kind that I’m unaware of… :)

Have a great month! Still loving the fall colors in the budget sheet.

    • Cait November 1, 2012 at 9:40 pm

No, nothing exciting… I’m just saving for furniture, for whenever I move out! I’ve got $1,000 so far but that won’t cover more than a new bed, bedding, and maybe a dresser. I don’t want to put all new things on credit, do I? ;) Gotta save!

Can you handle Christmas colours next month? Because that budget is already ready to go, haha.

Good Luck with all of your goals!

What I do is save for Christmas and Birthdays all year. This way I don’t get whomped when November rolls around….I have so many birthdays that fall in November, December, and January that if I didn’t start at the beginning of the year I’d be whooped.

    • Cait November 1, 2012 at 9:42 pm

I’ve done that before also, Nadia! But I’m fortunate to have a small family, so the holidays don’t usually cost me more than $300. Hope some readers read your tip though!

I’ve only just started tracking my expenses, but I think that maybe I should be following a budget similar to the set-up you have.

I too always try to get my Christmas shopping done in November. Everything just gets too busy and chaotic in December. If only I had gift ideas!

    • Cait November 1, 2012 at 9:44 pm

Funny – sometimes I think it’d be nice to have a pie chart like yours! But I’ve always posted dollars and cents here… don’t think that’ll change anytime soon.

And I try to get my shopping done for the very same reason! I’m a bit lost for ideas this year, as well, but am sure I’ll think of something… maybe…

  • beauty & the budget November 1, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Wow! $200 for birthdays/Christmas!! I don’t think I could ever do that! That’s really awesome!

I live in Toronto also, and was looking into getting a gym membership too! Try searching Kijiji for gym membership transfers! You can save a lot of money! You don’t have to pay startup fees and a lot of people have corporate rates!

    Good luck!

    • Cait November 2, 2012 at 10:12 am

Well, I’ll probably spend another $100 on Christmas in December… we’ll see. But I try to keep it under $250.

Thank you so much for the info re: gym memberships in Toronto! What a great idea.

I’m also trying to get all my shopping done by Dec 1st! And I want to avoid West Edmonton Mall in the process. I’m not sure what it is about this year, but all of a sudden I’m super excited for the holidays now that it’s November! Doesn’t help that it’ll be +6 in Edmonton today for some reason (not that I’m complaining at all).

    Good luck!

    • Cait November 6, 2012 at 8:47 am

I know I’ll have to do a tiny bit in Victoria, when I’m home… but I’d like to get the majority of my shopping done here in Toronto by the 1st.

Hope you enjoyed your +6 weather ;)

Good luck with NaNoWriMo – I’ve thought about trying, but haven’t gotten past that to try. Maybe next year. Anyways, I’m excited to hear more about it.

I’m with you on trying to get all the xmas shopping done before Dec 1. Christmas is more fun when you’re not freaking about getting last minute gifts.

    • Cait November 6, 2012 at 8:48 am

Absolutely. I love when December is spent doing nothing but visiting friends, sipping hot chocolate, and driving around to look at Christmas lights. Let’s get shopping outta the way and have some fun :)

  • B. (Below Her Means) November 4, 2012 at 10:48 pm

I feel the very same way about laying out the budget for a new month. It’s like a chance to do better.

    • Cait November 6, 2012 at 8:48 am

Every day is a chance to do better :)
