A Month in the Big Smoke: I’m Going Home!

October 19, 2012

As of Wednesday, I have been a resident of Toronto for one month. That’s one month of unpacking, settling in, getting started at work , making my way around the city and trying as many restaurants as my budget will allow. I finally know what time I need to leave in the morning to get to work on time (and that I need to add a few minutes, if I want Starbucks). But now, I’m going home! No, it’s not what you think…

Tomorrow morning, I’m getting on a plane and heading home to Victoria for 4 days and 4 nights. This short visit is going to fly by, as it’s already full of breakfast, lunch and dinner dates, as well as a #pfworkout with my favourite workout buddy and coffee with some old co-workers.

The trip will finish with an early morning convocation from Royal Roads University. I am so looking forward to walking across that stage and celebrating the end of what can only be described as the busiest two years of my life, with everyone who struggled alongside me and/or helped me through it.

Toronto, I’ll be back soon. Victoria, I’m coming home :)

For anyone who’s ever moved away from home, what’s your favourite thing to do when you visit?

Have a great trip! I miss the west coast (I was born in Victoria) I can’t wait to get back again, it’s been too long, almost 5 years… damn flight costs!

They are not cheap! But seat sales have gotten me return flights for less than $500 before.

Back in the day we moved to Toronto from Montreal – a company Head Office transfer move. The first year in Toronto we acted like tourists, seeing all the interesting sites around Toronto, getting to know our new adopted hometown. Of course, with friends and family back in Montreal, we still made trips back there to visit and to catchup but over the years, not as frequently.

Congratulations Cait on your upcoming convocation and hope you enjoy a wonderful time back in Victoria.

The “not as frequently” part won’t be a problem for me this year. I have a few weddings to attend (as I am in them) in Victoria next year, lol. Thanks, Rob!

Have a great time, C! We go home about once a year, sometimes twice, and I always love catching up with family & friends. We’re always so popular and our time is in high demand, which is nice, haha. It really makes the time fly by though.

As silly as this sounds, I have to go visit the grocery store (Meijer) because it’s only in the Midwest and it’s also the best grocery store, like, ever. I miss Meijer! I also get custard (I can’t find it here in Portland) and I visit this great local coffeeshop that has the best peanut butter-banana breakfast smoothies. I am obsessed with them. I also have to go to TJ Maxx because there are always killer deals. So basically, I do exactly what I would do if I lived there. Hit all the great local stores :]

Ha! I love that you go to the grocery store. There’s a mostly local fruit and vegetable market that I’ll definitely be visiting at Christmas :) and you’ll be able to go to yours this Christmas too!

Miss you. Email you this weekend, xoxo

My fave thing is to gather my ‘people’, and have dinner or play cards together.

Nice! I definitely had a couple meals with friends (and more with family). :)

I lived away from home for four years, but often came back on weekends. My favourite thing to do was to make the rounds as soon as we arrived to see all of my nieces and nephews – I missed them the most!

Now that I live where I grew up, whenever I go back to my “city home”, I make sure to hit up a few of my favourite restaurants, the park and the farmer’s market.

    • Cait October 24, 2012 at 10:36 am

I missed my friends’ kids and dogs the most, haha… funny how that happens.
